The zookeeper and the Amur tiger should not have been in the enclosure together. She was saved when onlookers at the Kaliningrad zoo started shouting and throwing stones at the tiger which eventually backed away. Zoo staff arrived at the scene later on and shot the tiger with a sedative. 'There is no threat to her life'. She declined to describe the zookeeper's injuries, but said: "Her condition is stable and her life is not in danger". (more...)

They've named the new species the Tapanuli orangutan ( Pongo tapanuliensis ). A remote population of frizzy-haired orangutans on the Indonesian island of Sumatra seems to be a new species of primate, scientists say. Even the Mountain gorillas, a subspecies of the eastern breed, are safer, according to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme.
