- August 10, 2018

It's the biggest meteor shower of the year, so you better stay up late and grab your binoculars. Records of the meteor shower date back nearly 2,000 years. During August, this loose nest of stars rises above the northeast horizon before midnight. So if you can find a spot away from artificial light and free of clouds, you will be in for a great show! Why does a meteor shower occur? The meteors will appear to streak away from and out of the constellations of Perseus and Cassiopeia. (more...)

What's great about the Perseids is they can be enjoyed during summer's warmth, unlike the often nippy nights during the Leonids of November or Geminids of December. But Cooke said the Perseids are rich in fireballs, so the show should be spectacular. Usually, on these peak nights it will produce 60-70 meteors an hour, but in bursts the rate can go up to 200 an hour. (more...)

Earth will pass through the path of Comet Swift-Tuttle from July 17 to August 24. The comet has a 133-year orbit, last visiting our part of the solar system back in 1992 (hence the big meteor show back in the 90s). "Remember, you don't have to look directly at the constellation to see them". You can tell if a meteor is a Perseid by following its direction backwards and, if it's coming from the direction of Perseus, it's a Perseid. (more...)
