The researchers didn't detect the cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in the wine until they vaporized it and turned it into ash. Their findings, newly published in the pre-print online journal Arxiv , suggest that currents and atmospheric patterns carried radioactive particles across the Pacific, where they settled on grapevines growing in California's wine regions. Mars to be very close to Earth on July 27 Mars to be very close to Earth on July 27
- July 26, 2018

The Red Planet will be just 35.8 million miles away from humanity's homeworld next Tuesday. On that date, Mars will be in opposition, meaning the orbit of Earth and Mars will form a straight line with the sun. On July 27, Mars will be in perihelic opposition, Express.co.uk reported on Sunday. If you've noticed a bright red light in the evening sky lately, you're actually not looking at a star, but at Mars. Since 2002, the amount of waste sent overseas to countries including China , Turkey, Malaysia and Poland has increased sixfold - accounting for half of the packaging reported as recycled past year. The NAO's report found only 25% of the firms most likely to misbehave over re-processing or exporting waste are inspected, while just 40% of planned compliance visits were actually carried out. Researchers Detect Evidence of Lake Beneath the Surface of Mars Researchers Detect Evidence of Lake Beneath the Surface of Mars
- July 26, 2018

The presence of liquid water on Mars has always been suspected but thus far evidence from MARSIS remained inconclusive. Mars is now cold and dry, but 3.6 billion years ago was home to plenty of liquid water. On Earth, microbial life persists down in the dark, frigid waters of one such lake. MARSIS operations manager Andrea Cicchetti said hints of subsurface anomalies had been detected before, but past attempts to confirm the results were foiled because the radar sampling rates were ... Water 'lake' found on Mars
- July 26, 2018

Putting an end to decades of doubt and debates, scientists have finally found evidence that there is not just frozen water on the surface of Mars, there actually is a massive reservoir-like catchment of liquid water just under the surface of the red planet . (more...)

This is the reason why lunar eclipses appear red. Over the night of July 27, and July 28, stargazers will be able to catch a glimpse of the longest lunar eclipse in over a century. During Friday's eclipse, the moon will be passing nearly directly through the middle of the shadow, maximizing the time that moon spends in darkness. (more...)

- July 26, 2018

During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon's disk can turn bright orange, blood red (hence the term " Blood Moon ") or even very dark gray, depending upon the part of the Earth's shadow it is passing through. The eclipse will be visible in South Africa from 20h24 and then from 21h30 to 23h13. But Friday's lunar eclipse has reignited Evangelical interest in a possible link between the event, the Jewish state, and the apocalypse. (more...)
'Game Changer': Scientists Say Liquid Water Found on Mars 'Game Changer': Scientists Say Liquid Water Found on Mars
- July 26, 2018

Some deposits have been mapped by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding ( MARSIS ), an instrument on the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter , which launched in 2003. Since then, we've found gaseous water in the atmosphere and frozen water on the ice caps, but until now, we've never found a body of water in liquid form. (more...)
Liquid water on Mars! Lake discovered under Martian ice cap
- July 26, 2018

Lake Vostok is a persistent lake of freshwater, some 4 kilometres below the surface of the East Antarctica ice sheet. Using radar to probe the polar ice caps of Mars, scientists have detected an underground reservoir of liquid that may be saltwater and that extends for about 20 kilometers in length. (more...)
Liquid water 'lake' is discovered on Mars
- July 25, 2018

We know that abundant liquid water existed on ancient Mars. But there hasn't been evidence of stable bodies of water until now, the researchers said. A dose of realism: Liquid water in large quantities could be a real boon to any future Martian colonists. However, the planet's climate has since cooled due to its thin atmosphere, leaving most of its water locked up in ice. (more...)
Scientists find signs of water buried deep in Mars
- July 25, 2018

It's situated near the planet's South Pole, where thick layers of ice have been observed in the past. The radar showed a bright reflective area that's consistent with water and, practically speaking, nothing else. "We were not seeing the thing that was right under our noses", says Roberto Orosei, a principal investigator (PI) for MARSIS at the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics in Bologna. (more...)
Giant Liquid Water 'Lake' Discovered On Mars Giant Liquid Water 'Lake' Discovered On Mars
- July 25, 2018

Their results suggest that a 20km-wide reservoir lies below ice about 1.5km thick in an area close to the planet's south pole. But this is the first sign of a permanent body of liquid water now on Mars , which is a really big deal. An Italian team made the discovery analysing a radar survey that was done between 2012 and 2015 by the Mars Express orbiter spacecraft. Salts in the lake are believed to have kept the water - which has a temperature as low as -68C (-90F) - from freezing over. (more...)

The probe will eventually be closer to the sun than Mercury. Therefore, the key to understanding its origins lies in understanding the Sun itself and that's where Parker Solar Probe comes in, according to the researchers at NASA . This makes the highly advanced heat shield extremely light (it weighs just 160 pounds, or about 72.5 kilograms), which allows the car-sized spacecraft to maintain its maneuverability. (more...)

They are too deep for humans to mine. MIT explains that this vast supply of diamonds is likely buried between 90 and 150 miles beneath the Earth's surface. The Mir Diamond Mine in Russian Federation, for instance, is the world's second-largest human-made hole and only goes about half a km deep. By comparing the way sound travels and bounces back, scientists can accurately find what rock lies beneath the surface and at what depth they lie. (more...)
