See the Longest Lunar Eclipse of This Century

These three factors are what have lengthened the duration of July's eclipse to 1 hour and 43 minutes, which NASA estimates will be the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century. On July 31st, Mars will be at only 57.6 million kilometers away from Earth, its closest point to our planet in its orbit around the Sun. Solar eclipses are unsafe to watch without certified, special glasses, but lunar eclipses don't require special head gear. (more...)

The new planet is named PDS 70b because it was caught forming a dusty disc around a star called PDS 70. Miriam Kessler, who headed up the group that found this wonderful event, told the Independent: "These discs around young stars are the birthplaces of planets, but so far only a handful of observations have detected hints of baby planets in them". Earth is billions of years old. The image was produced by an advanced piece of equipment within the Very Large Telescope array at the European Southern Observatory's facility in northern Chile. The planet can be seen just right of center inside the disk (the very bright blur). Using a powerful planet-hunting instrument on the telescope called SPHERE, an worldwide team of scientists was able to study the newborn planet at a crucial point in its development. (more...)

More than 6,800 tons of space debris is now flying in the space which possesses a threat to both ISS and other satellites.
