Since then, NASA's Galileo and Cassini, which whizzed near Jupiter on its way to Saturn, validated the initial theories that lightning on Jupiter occurs. Heat drives lightning, and the sun's rays cause Earth's equator to heat up more than the poles. "That distribution of lightning is kind of upside-down from what we'd expect on Earth", he said. The trackways' characteristics indicate that a bilaterian animal - that is, a creature with bilateral symmetry that has a head at one end, a back end at the other, and a symmetrical right and left side - made the tracks. Take that, rest of the pre-Cambrian life forms! Professor Shuhai Xiao, senior author of the study and geobiologist at Virginia Tech University, said their findings allow them to understand what species were first to evolve with legs. (more...)
