Enormous dust storm on red planet forcefully ceases activities of NASA’s Opportunity Enormous dust storm on red planet forcefully ceases activities of NASA’s Opportunity
- June 13, 2018

Nighttime on Mars is extremely cold, but using Opportunity's heaters can drain the batteries. NASA's Opportunity has been exploring Mars since 2004, but it functions on solar power. And it's seen dust storms bigger than the one it's experiencing now. Regardless of the outcome, it is extremely important to remember that Opportunity is now in its 14th Earth year of operation of what was supposed to be a 90-day mission when the rover landed on the Meridiani Planum on 25 January 2004. Since then, NASA's Galileo and Cassini, which whizzed near Jupiter on its way to Saturn, validated the initial theories that lightning on Jupiter occurs. Heat drives lightning, and the sun's rays cause Earth's equator to heat up more than the poles. "That distribution of lightning is kind of upside-down from what we'd expect on Earth", he said. The trackways' characteristics indicate that a bilaterian animal - that is, a creature with bilateral symmetry that has a head at one end, a back end at the other, and a symmetrical right and left side - made the tracks. Take that, rest of the pre-Cambrian life forms! Professor Shuhai Xiao, senior author of the study and geobiologist at Virginia Tech University, said their findings allow them to understand what species were first to evolve with legs. (more...)
