It turned out he had perforated his pyriform sinus - a pear-shaped sinus located on either side of the larynx, rupturing the back of his throat in the process. The man risked serious complications such as neck infection and was admitted to the hospital immediately after the diagnosis was complete. A British man has blown a hole in his throat after trying to hold in a sneeze, with doctors saying his grim story should act as a warning to others. It was immediately followed by a "popping" sound and his neck began to swell. After seven days, he was released and advised in the future to not block his airways while sneezing. Their report in the journal BMJ Case Reports said: 'Halting sneezing via blocking the nostrils and mouth is risky and should be avoided. (more...)

Regulators in the United States have approved a drug for women with advanced breast cancer caused by BRCA gene mutations, which disproportionately affects Ashkenazi Jewish women. About 250,000 people each year are diagnosed with breast cancer and just over 40,000 die from it, according to the National Cancer Institute. Approximately 20 percent to 25 percent of patients with hereditary breast cancers and up to 10 percent of patients with any type of breast cancer have a BRCA mutation. (more...)
