Britain's opposition Labour Party narrowly held on to a parliamentary seat in eastern England on Friday, seeing off a challenge from Nigel Farage's insurgent Brexit Party to win by less than 700 votes.

"For the remainder of her time in office, she will be building on the domestic agenda that she has put at the heart of her premiership", her spokeswoman told reporters on Friday.

The current candidates vying to become Britain's next prime minister have set out to handle the toughest task in British politics - to deliver Brexit.

Nearly a dozen Conservative lawmakers are already jostling to replace her in a contest that formally opens Monday, vowing to succeed where May failed and renegotiate Britain's divorce deal with the European Union.

The Conservative premier's turbulent time in office was swamped and ultimately sunk by her legacy-defining battle to secure a Brexit divorce deal. The victor of the party leadership race will automatically become the next prime minister.

They will then go forward to a ballot of Tory Party members, with the victor expected to be announced by July 22.

"She remains prime minister for a good few weeks yet", May's spokesman insisted, noting that any successor must meet Queen Elizabeth II and assure the head of state that they have the support of enough lawmakers to take over.
