Jupiter At Opposition In June Will Allow You To See Its Moons

Jupiter and its 4 moons will soon be visible with just binoculars

Jupiter will be so close to Earth in June that you will have the chance to see some of its moons ... if you have some binoculars.

NASA has a message for space lovers this month: Look up.

The largest planet of our solar system, Jupiter will be so close to the Earth that you wouldn't need a telescope to view it. NASA confirmed that Jupiter will be biggest and brightest this month, seen on all nights. As a result, Jupiter rises above our horizon around sunset and remains visible throughout the night.

From June 14 through 19, the moon will "form a lovely lineup in the sky" with Jupiter and Saturn that will change each night as the moon makes its orbit, NASA said. "If you have access to a small telescope then possible you can even get a glimpse" of part of the banded clouds that surround the planet. Amateur astronomers may want to see Jupiter when it reaches opposition, which means the planet is in line with (or opposite to) Earth and the sun. This entire month offers up great viewing opportunities.

Deputy executive director at Britain's Royal Astronomical Society, Dr Robert Massey, shared some advice to CNN on what to look out for. The planet and even its moons will be visible without a telescope, and Jupiter will be close to Earth than at any other time for the rest of the year.

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun, the fastest-spinning planet and the biggest in the Solar System. Currently, NASA's spacecraft Juno is orbiting the planet and has given some stunning footage in the oast few years.
