Four killed in small plane crash close to Dubai airport

Deadly plane crash brings world's busiest airport to halt

Four people, including three Brits and a South African, were killed in the crash that impacted operations at Dubai airport, a major aviation hub and the world's busiest airport for worldwide travel.

Thursday night's crash also killed three Britons, with the victims comprising the pilot, co-pilot and two passengers who were aboard the four-seater, UK-registered DA42 plane owned by Flight Calibration Services, based at Shoreham Airport in West Sussex, the BBC reported.

Honeywell said in a statement posted by the Dubai Media Office on Twitter the aircraft was operated by a third party on its behalf.

The four-seater DA42 plane, registered in the United Kingdom, was calibrating terrestrial navigation systems. Investigators have been sent to the scene.

Flight Calibrations Service announced in November it signed a contract to work on the airport's "navaids", the beacons around an airport that show pilots where runways are and how to land on them.

Dubai International Airport later told The Associated Press in a statement that the plane "was being used to calibrate the approach systems" at the airport.

Operations were affected between 7.36 pm and 8.22 pm UAE local time, after which flights resumed from the airport.

Honeywell, however, later clarified that it did not own the plane.

The victims include three United Kingdom nationals and a South African, GCAA said in a statement.

"All operations at the Dubai airport are running smoothly after a slight delay and diversion of some flights as a precautionary measure to ensure security following a minor incident involving a small plane", the Dubai Media office tweeted.
