Aston Martin details James Bond-inspired DB5 continuation

Aston Martin DB5 “Goldfinger” continuation car

Bonhams aims to sell a host of Aston Martin cars, accessories and associated memorabilia on an English country estate Sunday.

Cinema company EON Productions took part in designing the modern version of the vehicle, equipping it with several spy gadget replicas you may know from the movies.

In all, 28 of the James Bond DB5s will be produced, including one that will be kept by Aston Martin, one that will be kept by EON productions, the company that makes Bond movies and is helping to create the cars, and a third that will be auctioned for charity.

Subject to final engineering approval, the list of Bond-inspired gadgets will include these features familiar to viewers of the classic 1964 big screen hit.

As Aston Martin nears "production" of its continuation DB5 James Bond-edition models next year, it's down to the fine detail of making sure the vehicle has all the usual refinements.

Aston Martin announced last August that it will build a run of new DB5s built to the same spec as the "Goldfinger" cars.

One thing to keep in mind is that the cars won't necessarily be legal to drive on public roads.

Boeing finishes software update for grounded airliner
To date, Boeing has flown the 737 MAX with updated software for more than 360 hours on 207 flights, the company said . The next major step is a certification flight with Federal Aviation Administration representatives on board.

"We obviously don't have that luxury on these DB5s as all the gadgets have to work in the same auto all the time".

All the new cars will be authentic reproductions of the DB5 seen on screen, with some sympathetic modifications to ensure the highest levels of build quality and reliability.

Eon Productions" Special effects expert Chris Corbould said: "My involvement has chiefly been with the front guns, smoke screen and oil slick gadgets, with Aston Martin engineers producing the other items. Clearly this is not practical in untrained hands, so we have devised a new system to achieve a realistic effect'. This also means all 25 examples will be finished in Silver Birch paint, just like the original James Bond vehicle.

"The most iconic of these is, of course, the DB5 which famously featured in Goldfinger, Thunderball and Goldeneye, as well as Casino Royale and Skyfall". Well, nearly all as we doubt Aston Martin will install an ejection seat.

To further maintain authenticity, the cars will be built at Aston Martin's former plant in Newport Pagnell, which today serves as the Aston Martin Works heritage center.

The automaker, which floated on the London Stock Exchange previous year, has been plagued by higher costs as it invests more in its manufacturing plants and expands vehicle offerings.
