Critical security flaw in Windows 7 and Windows XP

Provided protection against a new subclass of speculative execution sidewall vulnerabilities, known as microarchitecture data sampling, for Windows 64-bit (x64) versions (CVE-2018-11091, CVE-2018-12126, CVE-2018- 12127, CVE-2018-12130). Systems running Windows 8 and Windows 10 are not affected.

As always, users are recommended to install these security updates as soon as possible, and to prioritize the patches targeting flaws already being exploited out in the wild.

Microsoft is trying to prevent the outbreak of a computer worm by urging owners of older Windows systems to patch their machines. However, it has made fixes available for these systems as patch KB4500705.

The flaw, which Microsoft described as "critical", enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Computers which use Network Level Authentication (NLA) are partially protected, Microsoft said, but an attacker with valid credentials could still exploit the vulnerability.

Microsoft says that the critical RDS vulnerability tracked as CVE-2019-0708 impacts only older in-support versions of Windows (i.e. Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008), with security updates for the affected versions being available via the Microsoft Security Update Guide.

Microsoft today is taking the unusual step of releasing security updates for unsupported but still widely-used Windows operating systems like XP and Windows 2003, citing the discovery of a "wormable" flaw that the company says could be used to fuel a fast-moving malware threat like the WannaCry ransomware attacks of 2017. These include CVE-2019-0725, a vulnerability in Windows Server's DHCP server.

While you're patching that, there's a lot of other stuff to fix in the Patch Tuesday update. Some, including CVE-2019-0911, CVE-2019-0912, CVE-2019-0914, CVE-2019-0924, and CVE-2019-0925, use flaws in Edge's scripting engine to gain the same privileges as the current user, while CVE-2019-0926 exploits the way that Edge accesses objects in memory.

Microsoft also resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in Skype for Android.

The vulnerability also requires no interaction from the owner of the affected Windows machine.

Adobe's ADV190012 fixes a critical remote code execution vulnerability in Adobe Flash, and APSB19-29 was released to fix an RCE vulnerability in Adobe Media Encoder.
