Trump vetoes Yemen War Powers Resolution, his 2nd veto since taking office

President Trump just issued the second veto of his presidency to block Congress

In his second veto since becoming President, Donald Trump vetoed on Tuesday night a Congressional resolution that would have ended the U.S. military role in Yemen.

In issuing the second veto of his presidency, Mr. Trump said the congressional action would be "endangering the lives of American citizens and courageous service members, both today and in the future". It is the second time that Mr Trump has used his veto power since entering the White House. The resolution had invoked the War Powers Act to distance the United States from the conflict in Yemen, which began in 2014. Intelligence agencies said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was complicit in the killing.

2020 Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders expressed a similar sentiment, writing: 'I am disappointed, but not surprised, that Trump has rejected the bi-partisan resolution to end USA involvement in the horrific war in Yemen.

"We can not end the conflict in Yemen through political documents like S.J. Res. 7", Mr. Trump said.

"Congressional engagement in those endeavors would be far more productive than expending time and effort trying to enact this unnecessary and unsafe resolution that interferes with our foreign policy with respect to Yemen", he said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi denounced Trump's veto, saying it would serve to "perpetuate America's shameful involvement in this heartbreaking crisis".

At the same time, Trump continues to want to keep strong ties with Saudi Arabia and does not share the view of Congress that the kingdom needs to be punished for the killing of Khashoggi, aides said. "The House of Representatives calls on the President to put peace before politics, and work with us to advance an enduring solution to end this crisis and save lives".

Rodgers is back atop the quarterback pay scale after signing an extension previous year that averages $33.5 million. His last deal made him the NFL's second-highest-paid quarterback, behind Aaron Rodgers' $22 million per season.

The U.S. has provided intelligence and logistical support to the Saudis since 2015.

Sen. Sanders has led the charge on the Yemen resolution and might make this a larger fixture of his 2020 presidential campaign, now that the president vetoed the resolution.

Kaine accused Trump of turning a blind eye to Khashoggi's killing and the jailing of women's rights activists in Saudi Arabia.

The US support role in Yemen started under the Barack Obama administration and has continued throughout the Trump Presidency. McCaul said it was an abuse of the War Powers Resolution and predicted it could disrupt USA security co-operation agreements with more than 100 countries.

Trump's first veto, issued last month, was of a congressional resolution disapproving of his emergency declaration.

David Miliband, President of the International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian aid group, said: "This veto by President Trump is morally wrong and strategically wrongheaded".
