India's WC cricket squad: Karthik pips Pant, Shankar in at No. 4

The BCCI selectors will meet in Mumbai on Wednesday to pick the 15-man Indian squad for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. The Committee of Administrators along with office bearers had decided on the date during a meeting last week. For the first time, it was aired live on Star Sports as the chief selector MSK Prasad and the BCCI secretary Amitabh Chaudhry addressed the media on Monday.

Karthik, the oldest Indian player in terms of worldwide debut (three months before Mahendra Singh Dhoni in September 2004), was also part of the Indian squad during its disastrous 2007 World Cup campaign.

Virak Kohli will captain the side, and the 15-man squad also includes ex-skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul. "That's the reason we went with Dinesh Karthik", MSK Prasad said when ask about the exclusion of Rishabh Pant at the press conference.

"That is the only reason why we went ahead with DK otherwise Pant was nearly there", he added.

"Pant is full of talent, he has time on his hands". Virat Kohli will captain the team while Rohit Sharma will be his deputy. With IPL 2019 already creating a buzz, the biggest announcement about ICC World Cup 2019 Team India squad is out.

Finishing the matches under pressure has come as a benefit to Dinesh Karthik.

Amidst the speculations for the No. 4 spot, Ambati Rayudu - who is not being in good form - is missing out of the team.

Speaking over Shankar's inclusion, Prasad said that the 26-year-old all-rounder from Tamil Nadu gives "three dimensions" to the team. Vijay Shankar also found himself in the squad and will most certainly occupy the hyped No. 4 slot.

"Over the four years we've been together, we have had so many guys who have contributed to the position we find ourselves", Morgan reflected. We also have Dinesh Karthik and Kedar Jadhav. The national team will leave for London on April 23 to play one-off T20I and five ODIs against England ahead of the World Cup.
