US President Donald Trump 'strongly looking' at releasing migrants in Democratic cities

White House considered releasing detained immigrants into ‘sanctuary cities’

The letter comes just days after the Treasury Department told Neal that it would not meet a one-week deadline to turn over the President's tax information and that it would instead consult with the Justice Department before responding further.

Instead of detaining immigrants with no documentation, Trump announced on Friday that his administration is considering having them relocate and live in designated sanctuary cities around the country. This has nothing to do with whether or not they are going to determine policy.

If the U.S. Treasury Department denies requests from Congress for the president's federal tax returns, they would at least have a chance of getting his state returns.

Trump and his aides discussed reinstating family separations, too, but Trump later said it wasn't happening.

Jaramillo called it more "posturing" and "showmanship from the commander in chief" but not a viable policy or solution to immigration issues.

Numerous administration's plans regarding asylum seekers have quickly been challenged in the courts as not legal or constitutional, including banning those who cross between ports of entry from claiming asylum at all, as well as a plan to have ever-increasing numbers wait in Mexico before their date in immigration court, which can take months or even years. As a result, more than 125,000 people have been released as they await court hearings - a practice Mr Trump has derided as "catch and release".

And it could actually make it more hard for Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to arrest people facing deportation, because so-called sanctuary cities do not work with ICE.

Trump then said on Friday he was still considering the idea.

"For far too long, we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and, frankly, I'm exhausted of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be exhausted of it", she said.

According to a 2015 Federal Bureau of Investigation crime data analysis report by Tom Wong, a professor of political science at the University of California at San Diego, sanctuary cities see 15 percent less crime than those deemed non-sanctuary cities.

The transportation of migrants arrested at the border to large and faraway cities would be burdensome and costly at a time when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) is stretched thin, having released over 125,000 migrants pending their immigration court date since 21 December. "He's using the immigrants as pawns in his political game of chess". The downside for the immigrants would be a high cost of living in the cities. "We'd love to work with you guys to figure out exactly the best way to transport these people were here illegally and unlawfully and into your communities and your districts and your states".

Democrats have said they will tackle immigration bills, possibly as soon as they return from their spring recess, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has indicated an interest.
