Former Obama White House counsel charged with lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation

U.S. President Barack Obama greets White House counsel Gregory Craig during an event at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building of the White House

Craig allegedly misled his law firm and the Justice Department about the extent of the work.

In addition to serving under Obama, Craig was White House special counsel to President Bill Clinton during his Senate impeachment trial and helped defend John Hinckley after he shot President Ronald Reagan. The case is part of a foreign lobbying investigation spun off from special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe. A spokesman for the US attorney's office declined to comment.

Mr Craig's work in the Ukraine happened after his year-long tenure with the Obama administration, while he was a senior partner at the Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom law firm.

His attorneys had called the case a "a misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion" and said the Justice Department's national security division pushed to indict Craig despite federal prosecutors in NY declining to bring charges, an assertion that couldn't immediately be verified.

He arrived in court Friday for his arraignment. 'Mr.

Notably, the law was cited in indictments of former chairman Paul Manafort, who was convicted of engaging in a secretive lobbying operation for Kremlin-backed Ukrainian president back in 2012, and former national security adviser Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who admitted to a foreign lobbying violation when he pleaded guilty to making false statements.

"Hiding the truth of who one represents from policymakers undermines our political discourse and diminishes the quality of our policymaking because people need the facts for democracy to work", Berman Jackson said.

The firm allegedly was involved in crafting a report that sought to validate Yanukovich's decision to have the government prosecute and subsequently imprison former prime minister and rival Yulia Tymoshenko.

In its settlement earlier this year, Skadden acknowledged it participated in a public relations campaign for the report and should have registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA. The firm also acknowledged it had been paid $4.6 million for the report and not just $12,000, as the Ukrainian government had said at the time.

Greg Craig indicted over Ukrainian government connections; Mike Emanuel has the details.

Greg Craig was indicted on Thursday for making false claims and withholding information in a federal foreign lobbying inquiry, which coincided in time with Special Counsel Mueller's report.

They said Craig did not want to register as a foreign agent because he believed it could prevent him from reentering government service.

The treatment of the Craig indictment in legacy media contrasted with the intense attention the media gave to other Mueller cases.
