Qualcomm Announces New AI Chip for Cloud Data Center Servers

Qualcomm AI Day: Snapdragon 665, 730, 730G mobile platforms announced with focus on camera, AI and gaming

Qualcomm has launched new processors for mid-range smartphones - Snapdragon 730, Snapdragon 730G, Snapdragon 665.

According to Qualcomm's VP of product management, Kedar Kondap, the three new platforms come to bring "sophisticated AI, exceptional gaming and advanced camera capabilities to a broad spectrum of devices". This is one of the reasons for introducing a gaming-centric Snapdragon 730G SoC.

The Snapdragon 730G is a gaming version of the 730, and offers up to 15% faster graphics rendering than the Snapdragon 730. The latest Snapdragon 665 processor has the Qualcomm Spectra 165 ISP that offers enhanced scene recognition and auto adjustments like HDR.

The Snapdragon 8-series processors are used in top-of-the-line, flagship-level smartphones.

For starters, the Snapdragon 730 is based on an 8nm die lithography and features an octa-core Kyro 470 CPU that operates at up to 2.2GHz. Snapdragon 665 features the X12 LTE Modem that gives download speeds of up to 600 Mbps. For graphics, it supports the Adreno 618 GPU.

It brings support for the new Wi-Fi 6, known as ax, and also Qualcomm's X15 modem, which reaches speeds of 800 megabit per second, a good for the 700 series. These being said, we should probably get ready for a wave of mid-range handsets focused on gaming thanks to the Snapdragon 730G.

What's more, the chipmaker estimates that it'll offer 50 times the peak AI performance of its Snapdragon 855 SoC; this offers around 7TOPS of performance, which suggests the Cloud AI 100 will top out around the 350TOPS range.

The SD 665 platform features 8x Kryo 260 CPU which have been divided into four performance and four efficiency cores. The Snapdragon 730 is equipped with Qualcomm's fourth generation multi-core Qualcomm AI Engine, twice as powerful as the previous generation's AI Engine.

The Snapdragon 730, 730G and 665 chips will be available mid-2019. It has a Hexagon 688 DSP and a Spectra 350 ISP which supports up to a 36MP single camera or a 22MP dual camera module with support for 960fps 720p slow-motion capture and 4K HDR portrait mode. It also supports NFC and Qualcomm QuickCharge 4+ technology for fast charging. Qualcomm's looking to change that, a little, with the Snapdragon 730G.

Gaming: For gaming enthusiasts, Snapdragon 665 is created to allow users to play latest and popular games with fast frame rates, super smooth interactions, surround-sound audio and extremely realistic graphics.

The Snapdragon 730 supports displays of upto FHD+ resolution. It promises up to 15% faster graphics rendering over the Snapdragon 730 and comes with a Jank Reducer feature that reduces janks in games by up to 90% running at 30fps.

As per Qualcomm, the Network latency manager optimizes network settings and handles Wi-Fi configurations efficiently for smoother gameplay. It has eight Kryo 260 cores (four performance, four efficiency) that can be clocked up to 2GHz.

The Snapdragon 730s will support triple-camera systems and high-resolution depth sensors and save photos and videos in HEIF format and are WiFi 6 compatible.
