NYC declares public health emergency, orders mandatory measles vaccinations

Decoding The Single Most Effective Way To Get Rid Of Measles

"Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency on Tuesday and has ordered mandatory vaccinations for people who may have been exposed to the virus in parts of Williamsburg amid a growing measles outbreak", reports WCBS.

"It is crucial for people to understand the measles vaccine works - it is safe, it is effective, it is time-tested", de Blasio said.

The Brooklyn outbreak has been tied to an unvaccinated child who contracted the disease during a trip to Israel, which has recently seen a high incidence of measles, the Washington Post reported.

"This outbreak is being fuelled by a small group of anti-vaxxers in these neighbourhoods".

People who resist could be fined $1,000. Since then, however, there has been a steep increase in reported cases, with at least 465 incidents of measles reported in the USA since January 1.

Outbreaks of the measles - a disease thought to be all but eliminated in the USA - have health officials concerned.

Schlesinger is trying to reverse false information being spread about the measles vaccine through the Orthodox community.

Most cases have been reported from Williamsburg and Borough Park - two Brooklyn neighborhoods with large ultra-Orthodox Jewish populations, in which vaccination rates tend to be lower.

Another outbreak has hit Orthodox Jewish families in New York's Rockland County.

"We can not ignore the number of people becoming sick from the Measles in NY", said State Sen. While there have been no confirmed deaths so far, 21 people have been hospitalised, with five admitted to intensive care, officials said.

"As a parent, I have no doubt that each and every parent is making decisions based out of what they believe is best for their children", said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Dr. Herminia Palacio.

News of the order got a mixed reaction in Williamsburg, with some residents - even those who support vaccination - saying they felt uncomfortable with the city pushing vaccines on people who don't want them. Among serious complications, 1 in 20 patients get pneumonia, and 1 in 1,000 get brain swelling that can lead to seizures, deafness or intellectual disability.

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld such an order in a 1905 case involving smallpox vaccinations in Cambridge, Massachusetts. "We stand with the majority of people in this community who have worked hard to protect their children and those at risk".

The best protection from measles is to have two MMR vaccinations. CDC figures show 71.2 percent of children that age in Alabama had received the recommended doses vaccines, including MMR, in 2018.

Both outbreaks in the state are thought to have originated from Israel (the disease was declared eradicated in the U.S.in 2000).

Non-vaccinated minors in the county were banned from public places in a bid to prevent the spread of the disease, and hundreds of people have now been vaccinated, according to authorities.

Like all but three American states, NY requires a series of vaccinations for school-age children but has until now granted exemptions on both medical and religious grounds.

"I would expect that this outbreak is going to get bigger before it comes under control", said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in Baltimore. Infants ages 6 to 11 months should also be vaccinated prior to global travel.
