New Line Cinema Sets Sopranos Prequel Film For September 2020

Now, Deadline reports that the film's latest title is simply "Newark", and that it will be released on september 25, 2020. "Sopranos" (and "Game of Thrones") alum Alan Taylor is directing the movie for New Line.

As previously reported, the film was originally had the working title of "The Many Saints of Newark" but that has now changed to just "Newark".

David Chase, the creator of the HBO series, teamed up with Lawrence Konner for the script, which is rumored to be set during the Newark riots of July 1967.

Joining Gandolfini is Alesandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti, the father of Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli) from the original series.

There is no word yet on when production may begin on The Many Saints of Newark.

What we know: Newark is set in the era of the Newark riots in the '60s, when African Americans and Italian Americans in the city were at each other's throats. In addition to Gandolfini, the cast includes Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, and Ray Liotta.
