Indian Wells: Rafael Nadal withdraws from Roger Federer semi-final

ATP Indian Wells Rafael Nadal withdraws sending Roger Federer into final

Federer, who is looking to follow up his 100th title in Dubai last month, had a more comfortable outing in ending the run of young Pole Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 6-4.

He had been set to play longtime rival Roger Federer in the semifinals.

The world number two was set to face Federer for a place in the final, having reached the last four without dropping a set in wins over Jared Donaldson, Diego Schwartzman, Filip Krajinovic and Karen Khachanov this week.

"Still tough because I felt more or less OK during this beginning of the season in terms of my knee", he said.

"Obviously I hope I will be one hundred per cent tomorrow".

Khachanov, ranked 13th in the world, saved three set points at 5-4 as he fought to force a tie-break. The first semifinal begins at 2 p.m. EST. I had some small chances in the second set. He didn't play again until the Australian Open, where he fell in the championship match to Novak Djokovic.

He eventually built another 5-2 gap and rallied to the finishing line after two hours and 16 minutes.

Hurkacz did well to keep in touch on serve. "I can not guarantee how I'm going to wake up tomorrow morning".

"At this stage of the tournament, anyway, you have to bring your best game".

Nadal said he won't play again until the Monte-Carlo Masters on clay in mid-April. The 11-time French Open victor leads overall 23-15.

"A lot of time has gone by". It's always better to keep on playing against him. I think it all adds to the cool rivalry that we've had.

Dominic Thiem and Milos Raoni are instead playing just now for a spot in the final.
