Google folding display patent emerges, but don’t expect a foldable Pixel yet

Earlier this year, we saw reports noting that Motorola's working on a foldable version of the famed Razr phone. Well, a new patent filed by Google indicates the company might have something in store for fans of pocketable devices. As seen in the diagram, the fold is inwards from the top. Another sketch shows the device folded in a "Z" shape.

Google is likely to be working on a foldable smartphone.

These types of patents frequently appear but only rarely do we get to see a finished product based on them. The most interesting part is that Google doesn't manufacturer displays.

The patent, published in December, describes the device like so: "a$3 foldable display of a computing device includes a back stiffening layer, a transparent frontplate layer, a transparent cover window layer, and an OLED display layer disposed between the back stiffening layer and the transparent frontplate layer".

The move to open up Xbox Live to a wider audience is part of a bigger push to get Microsoft's tools and services to more platforms.

Newfangled gadgets have always been subject to all sorts of rumors and speculations, and foldable phones are no exception.

While only Samsung and Huawei have foldable phones that will hit the market soon, a succession of leaked patents suggest everyone from ZTE to Apple have plans to enter the market, and these handsets come in a range of designs from "clamshells" that fold down to "notebooks" that open up.

The search giant's not the only one trying to make a small foldable phone.

In other words, if a Google folding phone is in the works, Google probably won't be in a hurry to reach the market with it, or use it to pioneer a unique Z-folding design. The company has already announced that it worked on a specific Android build for foldable phones, which Samsung and Huawei now use, so it's clearly been thinking about folding devices for a while. All I'm saying is, don't expect the folding Google Pixel (Fixel?) this Autumn alongside the Pixel 4 series.
