European Union imposes sanctions against Russians involved in capture of Ukrainian sailors

Europa Building

As stated by the European Council on 13 December, the EU requests the immediate release of all detained Ukrainian seamen as well as the return of the seized vessels and free passage of all ships through the Kerch Strait.

According to the US State Department, Washington's new set of restrictions have been introduced in coordination with the European Union and Canada.

"This joint initiative with our partners in the European Union and Canada reinforces our shared commitment to impose targeted and meaningful sanctions in response to the Kremlin's attempts to disregard global norms and undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity", he added.

Four of the individuals are border guard or coastguard officials, singled out for their role in a November 25, 2018, naval confrontation, in which Russian ships fired on and seized three Ukrainian vessels in the narrow Kerch Strait linking the Black and Azov seas near Crimea.

European Union operators are also forbidden from making funds available to the listed individuals and entities.

The U.S. Treasury sanctions also target six Russian defense firms operating in Crimea, the statement said, "several of which misappropriated Ukrainian state assets to provide services to the Russian military" during its 2014 annexation of Crimea.

The Russian navy captured 24 Ukrainian sailors during the clash.

Today, the United Kingdom and our global partners in the EU, Australia, Canada and the U.S. have sent an unequivocal message to Russian Federation that their attack on Ukrainian vessels in the Kerch Strait and Black Sea a year ago was absolutely unacceptable.

"Ukraine's Autonomous Republic of Crimea was annexed by the Russian Federation, in violation of worldwide law, based on an illegitimate referendum held five years ago today", according to a statement.

New companies on the US sanctions list are the following: Yaroslavsky Shipbuilding Plant, Zelenodolsk Shipyard Plant named after A.M. Gorky, AO Kontsern Okeanpribor (Okeanpribor), PAO Zvezda (Zvezda), AO Zavod Fiolent (Fiolent), GUP RK KTB Sudokompozit (Sudokompozit), LLC SK Consol-Stroi LTD, and LLC Novye Proekty.

The Parliament also said the Russian government's continued and active support for anti-EU parties and far-right movements in Europe posed a major security threat to the 28-member bloc, and that the Kremlin continues to order Russia's intelligence services to carry on meddling in political elections and violate the human rights of Russian citizens. He claimed his net worth has dropped by $7.5bn because of the measures.
