Bangladesh team narrowly avoid New Zealand terror attack

Bangladesh's national cricket team have narrowly dodged one of the mosque attacks in New Zealand, which together have killed at least 49 people.

The Bangladesh team were able to return to Hagley Oval, where Saturday's third Test was scheduled to take place.

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said 10 more people were killed in a shooting at another mosque in the city, while 20 are seriously injured.

The players and other members of the touring party are safe, in lockdown at their hotel; some of them were on their way to one of the mosques for Friday prayers at the time of the attack but escaped to the nearby Hagley Oval. Jalal Yunus, the spokesperson of the BCB, said that most of the players were on the bus when the incident happened and was about to enter the mosque.

Mario Villavarayen, the team's strength and conditioning coach, said it had been a close call. He also added that they have discussed with Bangladesh and decided that it is not the right time to play cricket.

Their team bus was only about 50 yards from the mosque and players were crying and worrying how they would safely get out of the vehicle. International Cricket Council chief executive David Richardson said it "fully supports the decision to cancel the test match".

New Zealand's cricket team faced another such incident when a bomb exploded outside their team hotel in Karachi, killing 12 people.

"We are shocked and appalled as I'm sure all New Zealanders are". "Frightenning experience and please keep us in your prayers".

Player Mushfiqur Rahim posted 'Alhamdulillah Allah save us today while shooting in Christchurch in the mosque.

"I spoke to one of them shortly after [the incident]". Twitter has suspended an account purportedly used by New Zealand mass shooting suspect, a journalist has reported.

"They were just outside the mosque about to get off from the bus and go into the mosque when they heard shooting and a lot of people running out and they saw someone wounded in front of them". We kept our heads down in the bus, in case of any firing (towards them).

Australia's cricket team boycotted a tour in Bangladesh in 2015 citing a lack of security.

"Only two of the players had stayed back in the hotel, and rest of the squad had gone there".

After being barred from getting off the bus for several minutes, the players escaped and are now "locked down" in their dressing room, per ESPNCricinfo.
