Donald Trump blasts May over her handling of Brexit - ‘She didn’t listen!’

Speaking in the Oval Office where he is meeting Irish premier Leo Varadkar, Mr Trump said: "It's a very complex thing right now, it's tearing a country apart, it's actually tearing a lot of countries apart and it's a shame it has to be that way but I think we will stay right in our lane".

"I will tell you, I'm surprised at how badly it has all gone from the standpoint of a negotiation".

"The president, who described Brexit as a" lovely, attractive thing" during a visit to Scotland in June 2016, said the UK's divorce from the European Union is "tearing apart" Britain and other member states which he believes is "a shame".

The US president also said he did not think another vote on Brexit would be possible because it would be unfair, and reiterated that he would like to see a US trade deal with the United Kingdom after it leaves the EU.

Mr Trump was asked by reporters if he was still a Brexit supporter.

He said he would like to see the "whole situation with Brexit work out", adding "we are talking with them about trade and we can do a very big trade deal with the UK".

He also warned of tariffs being applied on the European Union if trade talks with the United States falter.

Trump, during the traditional St. Patrick's Day seasonal meeting here between the leaders of the United States and Ireland, then turned to Varadkar, offering him an opportunity to speak about Brexit.

"I will be coming at some point this year", he said.

Varadkar said that Trump and he each have "a different opinion" of the decision to leave the European Union, and said, "I regret that Brexit's happening". Irish leaders say a new formal border would put profitable commerce at risk and invoke the ghosts of the bloody conflicts in Northern Ireland known as the Irish Troubles.

"We have a different opinion", he said, referring to the president.

She told BBC News NI that she would "very much" like to se the U.S. president visit Northern Ireland. The conflict pitted loyalist Protestant paramilitary groups and the British army against the Irish Republican Army, a Catholic republican militia that was considered a terrorist organization by London.

Trump's intervention on Brexit is very welcome, according to pro-Brexit analyst Niles Gardiner, who worked for former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher after she left office. "And I was standing out on Turnberry, and we had a press conference, and people were screaming".

Parliament will vote later Thursday on whether to extend the March 29 deadline for a deal.
