Defying President Donald Trump US Senate votes to end support for Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen

The U.S. Senate defied President Donald Trump on Wednesday and voted to cut off support for the Saudi-led coalition fighting rebels in Yemen.

His legislation calls for an end to a USA role in hostilities in Yemen, a nation of almost 30 million people at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, where fighting between the Saudi-backed government and the Houthi rebel movement, backed by Iran, has been raging for four years.

The measure seeks to end any USA military involvement in the conflict in Yemen, including providing targeting support for Saudi air strikes, without authorization from Congress.

Senators viewed the vote as an opportunity to not only reassert Congress' authority to declare war, but to rebuke the Trump administration over its posture toward Saudi Arabia in the aftermath of Khashoggi's murder, Politico reported. In an attempt to "halt American military involvement in a foreign conflict", this is the first time the decade-old War Powers Resolution was invoked. Susan Collins of Maine, Steve Daines of Montana, Mike Lee of Utah, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Todd Young of Indiana.

But the White House has promised a veto on whatever emerges, and Wednesday's vote signals there's more than enough support for the president to sustain that.

Now the U.S. House is in Democratic hands and Blumenthal urged the chamber to "take up and pass this resolution so we can issue a final condemnation of United States' support for this war - once and for all".

"The United States should end its involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen that has resulted in widespread starvation, disease, and death", Blumenthal said.

He said frustration with Saudi Arabia is expected after the regime admitted to killing journalist Jamal Khashoggi past year, but he said undercutting the coalition's efforts in Yemen would hand a victory to Iran's faction. Lawmakers from both parties have called for a reappraisal of the U.S. -Saudi relationship and accused Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Khashoggi's murder, even as Trump has stood by him.

"We need to stay engaged with the limited engagement that we have", said Senator Jim Risch, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.

Romney said the US now provides limited support to the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, including intelligence-sharing and advice on compliance with the laws of war.

This decisive vote will end "the American facilitation of the Yemen war and the world's largest humanitarian crises".

Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Republican Sen.

The 1973 law was supposed to provide a check on the growing number of worldwide military entanglements presidents committed the U.S.to, without actually seeking a war declaration or other authorization from Congress.

A similar measure was introduced in the US House in February, however, as The Hill reports, it "ran into a procedural roadblock" when it got to the US Senate, and was not able to be voted on in a manner that would allow it to pass with a simple majority vote, which in the Senate requires a total of 51 yeas.
