Google is redeploying Pixel staff, raising questions on its future hardware plans

Google's Pixelbook

We know Chromecast, Pixel and Home pretty well in Australia, but the company's own Chromebook hardware - also carrying the Pixel moniker as Pixelbook and Pixel Slate - has never officially come to Australia.

For now, Google is asking affected employees to seek temporary roles, meaning that the company could revert the alleged downsizing down the line.

According to Business Insider, Google is now in the process of implementing a number of "roadmap cutbacks".

Google's Pixel Slate, launched late past year at the company's Made By Google event in NY, is yet to launch in many markets and makes an intriguing case for itself running Chrome OS but also being able to run Android apps.

This assumption is supported by internal sources who stated that, prior to the recent cutbacks, Create had a "bunch of stuff in the works" but will now focus primarily on finishing its near-term projects. Already, these "floating" employees have been seeking roles within the company's smartphone division, Pixel, and other Alphabet companies, sources say.

Google's first Pixel device, the Chromebook Pixel laptop, was announced in 2013.

Manufacturing plans haven't been adjusted, however, which means that the products that Google plans to release in the short term wouldn't be affected by Google's restructuring.

A Google spokesperson declined Business Insider's request for comment. Unfortunately, this impressive performance doesn't extend to the company's tablets and laptops, and it now seems Google is taking action.

A report like this raises more questions than it answers, so we'll make sure to keep an eye out for any follow-up coverage as it comes out. The longtime tech reviewer Walt Mossberg said that the Pixel C represents "an object lesson in what Google shouldn't do if it pursues home-grown integration of hardware and software". But it looks like the company might be slimming down its hardware portfolio, as the firm is reportedly moving employees from its tablet and laptop division.
