Apps for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp were down for some users around the world for several hours Wednesday, with unidentified technical problems causing widespread disruptions.

Downdetector.com has seen a spike in problem reports since about 11:00 CST.

The apps owned by Facebook and Google were affected by an internet outage in different parts of the world.

"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps", a Facebook spokesperson said in an email.

"The length of time, plus number of users affected, makes this comfortably the most severe outage in Facebook's history", he said on Twitter".

Facebook, on Twitter, last gave an update about ongoing outages on its platforms on it's platforms on Wednesday afternoon.

Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger have all been affected by the partial outage across the U.S. and Europe.

The firm was forced to post on rival social media site Twitter after Facebook users received error messages when trying to post updates.

While the outage continued, The New York Times reported that USA prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the social network's practice of sharing users' data with companies without letting them know. Individual users have been able to post sporadically throughout the outage.

The outages appear to be concentrated around the United States and Europe, as well as eastern Australia.

"We know this is frustrating, and our team is hard at work to resolve this ASAP", wrote Instagram.
