Brexit: MPs to vote on Theresa May's deal

Labour MPs have been calling for clarification on what will happen on March 29 - the day the United Kingdom is scheduled to officially leave the EU.

The pound tumbled Tuesday after the United Kingdom government's top legal advisor cast doubt on Prime Minister Theresa May's last-gasp changes to her Brexit deal, hours before a vital vote. A no-deal Brexit would be catastrophic for businesses, which would on March 30 immediately face new tariffs, supply chain disruptions and regulatory uncertainty on an epic scale.

"I think no deal is going to be very disruptive for the economy and I think no deal also has serious questions for the union", Barclay said.

That appeared unlikely after Cox's assessment.

If lawmakers vote down May's deal, she has promised a vote on Wednesday on whether to leave without a deal and, if they reject that, then a vote on whether to ask for a limited delay to Brexit. Today we have secured legal changes. Another Brexiteer, Owen Paterson, tweeted that Cox's opinion made it "brutally clear" that nothing had changed.

"The attorney-general has confirmed that there have been no significant changes to the withdrawal agreement, despite the legal documents that were agreed last night", Keir Starmer, a Labour Party MP, said in a statement. "The Government's strategy is now in tatters".

Ian Strafford-Taylor, CEO of currency expert FairFX, told Daily Star Online: "The pound lifted this morning as a positive reaction to the PMs deal talks last night and at the moment the pound stands at 1.173 against the euro, the highest it's been since May 2017".

"If you pushed me to the end point where it's a choice between no deal and no Brexit". Afterward, hard-core Brexit supporters in May's Conservative Party and the prime minister's allies in Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party both said they could not support the deal.

Brexit: MPs to vote on Theresa May's deal

The U.K. and the European Union have agreed to "legally binding changes" to the European Union withdrawal agreement and the political declaration, British Prime Minister Theresa May said Monday night.

The so-called "backstop" solution for the Irish border - created to avert sectarian violence from returning to Britain's Northern Ireland - is opposed by more ardent Brexit backers.

However, Cox said "I also advised that in the specific case that situation was due to the EU's want of good faith and best endeavors, because of the difficulties of proof and the egregious nature of the conduct that would be required to establish a breach by the European Union of those obligations, it would be highly unlikely that the United Kingdom could take advantage of the remedies available to it for such a breach under the Withdrawal Agreement". The two sides also agreed to continue working on technology that would do away with the need for border checks.

Sterling, which had been rising after May secured revisions to the Brexit withdrawal agreement, hit reverse after legal advice from Attorney General Geoffrey Cox.

The EU, which had warned there would be no more changes or negotiations if Parliament threw out the deal, expressed exasperation at yet another Brexit crisis. It is what we do with the second chance that counts.

Mrs May said passing the vote would allow the country to move on to a brighter future, while the alternative was uncertainty with no guarantee of what happens next. It remains to be seen if they are enough to get the deal passed.

So she also needed to look to the opposition benches. They are likely to agree, as long as Britain leaves before elections to the European parliament in late May.

The "no-deal" scenario's likely defeat would lead to a vote on Thursday on requesting a delay to Brexit from the EU.
