Bomb Cyclone Threatening More Than 70 Million People Across Central U.S.

The storm is expected to reach the criteria of a "bomb cyclone" because it's going to strengthen by dropping 24 millibars in 24 hours, according to Fox News Senior Meteorologist Janice Dean.

The storm is on its way to the central and northern Plains and the Upper Midwest with blizzard conditions.

"This storm will be responsible for heavy rains, severe thunderstorms, isolated flooding, heavy snows, blizzard conditions and high winds over the next two days across large portions of the Central United States", the National Weather Service said on Wednesday morning.

Amid the expected severe weather, more than 1,200 flights within, into or out of the USA were canceled as of Wednesday morning, according to the website FlightAware. Blizzard warnings were put into effect from northeast Colorado and southeast Wyoming across western Nebraska and southwest South Dakota, according to NWS.

In the Northern Hemisphere, areas of low pressure are called cyclones, and rapidly developing storms are often called bombs or weather bombs. The majority of those cancellations are at Denver International Airport (DIA), where a blizzard warning is in effect.

Travel will be risky, if not impossible, at times, across areas where the blizzard warning has been issued.

Hundreds of flights bound for, or departing from, the Denver airport were canceled. Severe storms capable of producing damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes are forecast from the southern Plains and into the Mississippi River Valley.

It already left more than 100,000 customers without power in Colorado as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Xcel Energy.

Denver itself is expected to get snow accumulations of about 5 to 8 inches on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service warned residents of Boulder, Colo. against traveling on Wednesday afternoon and evening, citing the possibility of icy roads, whiteout conditions, and strong winds, according to CNN.

In Nebraska, officials late Wednesday morning closed a roughly 130-mile strech of westbound Interstate 80, from Ogallala to the state line with Wyoming, because of the blizzard. Winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour with gusts over 60 miles per hour are expected across parts of New Mexico, western Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

Winds could - and have - been clocked at 90 miles per hour.

The storm could also cause flooding, as rain falls on accumulated snow and rivers clogged with ice begin to rise.
