Facebook is getting a whole lot more privacy focused

Zuckerberg has seen the light Facebook to make drastic changes

Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said the future of his company's product development will be focused on private, ephemeral and encrypted communication, a striking change for the social network that built its business on open sharing. Presumably this is all after it's finished doing everything it can to fight privacy laws.

While Zuckerberg is, once again, talking the talk, he will have an uphill battle to convince social networking users of Facebook's pivot to privacy.

"Zuckerberg does understand, however, why people are questioning Facebook's newfound commitment to privacy, ".because frankly we don't now have a strong reputation for building privacy protective services". But we've repeatedly shown that we can evolve to build the services that people really want, including in private messaging and stories.

In the post, Zuckerberg said Facebook's move to encrypted messaging could be safer for government dissidents and others with controversial views.

"There are some huge unknowns about how successful Facebook is going to be rolling advertising into a more private messaging environment", said eMarketer analyst Debra Aho Williamson.

Zuckerberg notes that private messaging, and messaging in small groups, are the fastest growing areas in online communications today, and Facebook will rebuild features around privacy.

Follow Business Insider Australia on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. The Chinese company's app combines a dizzying array of activity, as if Facebook, Uber, PayPal and many other services were combined to form a super app, replacing the Web browser as the dominant conduit connecting a person to the Internet.

Reducing Permanence. People should be comfortable being themselves, and should not have to worry about what they share coming back to hurt them later.

USWNT lawsuit: 28 players sue U.S. Soccer for gender discrimination
The team has bargained for equal pay during their contract negotiations, striking an agreement in 2017 that runs through 2021. They claim the organization pays them less than male players and denies them equal training, travel and playing conditions.

Eagles trade Michael Bennett to Patriots
Bennett seemed to have a good relationship with both Tom Brady and Bill Belichick during his time with the organization. Historically, the Patriots aren't quick to give out expensive long-term contracts to even the elite players they have.

But unraveling Facebook could become more hard if Zuckerberg can successfully stitch together the messaging services behind an encrypted wall.

"Frankly we don't now have a strong reputation for building privacy protective services, and we've historically focused on tools for more open sharing". This particular sermon's themes were privacy and security-topics I think we can all agree Facebook is known for and excels at.

"I expect future versions of Messenger and WhatsApp to become the main ways people communicate on the Facebook network".

Facebook's focus on messaging privacy raises other concerns.

Earlier this year, the New York Times reported that Facebook planned to integrate its messaging platforms, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

These "tradeoffs" include the possibility of Facebook getting banned in countries like Russian Federation and Vietnam whose law enforcement agencies do not allow encryption, and also demand that data be stored in local servers within the country.

"I believe the future of communication will increasingly shift to private, encrypted services where people can be confident what they say to each other stays secure and their messages and content won't stick around forever", Zuckerberg said. However, coins such as these will never be able to supplant Bitcoin when it comes to truly controlling your own wealth, privacy, and freedom.

Finally, the report does offer ways to limit data collection and user tracking, but no solution would provide a permanent fix. "But if we do a good job in serving the need that people have, then there will certainly be an opportunity" to make even more money.
