OpenMedia applauds new bill to restore Net Neutrality in the US

The Save the Internet Act is a major step towards restoring Net Neutrality protections in the United States, and addressing the outcry of millions of people throughout the country concerned by the deterioration of Net Neutrality under Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Ajit Pai.

The Save The Internet Act of 2019 was unveiled today by Sen.

House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi stated at a news conference today where the bill was announced that "a full 86-percent of Americans opposed the Trump assault on Net Neutrality, including 82-percent of Republicans".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that the bill will be up for a vote in the House in a "matter of weeks". "Whether it's slowing down Netflix, blocking access to innovative mobile services, or adopting anti-competitive zero-rating policies, the track record for ISPs on this issue is clear".

However, proponents of net neutrality believe the internet is more fair, equal and innovative without the rule. "I applaud the bicameral group of lawmakers who introduced this bill for acting to return the Internet to where it belongs-in the hands of Internet users, not broadband providers". They were upheld in the Senate in a bipartisan vote and garnered bipartisan support in the House last year before the year ended. If Republican senators listen to their constituents, perhaps the bill could actually pass through Congress. But forcing a vote in the Senate will require more cooperation from Republicans than a year ago.

For much of the past year, Democrats' legislative strategy revolved around the Congressional Review Act.

Teen who got vaccinated despite parents' wishes speaks before Congress
Ethan Lindenberger , an OH teen who got vaccinated against his parents' wishes, spoke at a Senate hearing on Tuesday. The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is 93 percent or more effective at preventing measles, according to the CDC .

"Simply reviving a defunct regulatory order isn't legislation, and probably wouldn't stand up in court when challenged", he said, adding that the bill is likely dead-on-arrival in the Republican-controlled Senate.

But CRA resolutions that nullify an agency decision can only be passed in the same Congressional session in which the agency decision was made.

"The Save the Internet Act reinstates the legal framework that ensures that the Internet will remain open and free", said Gigi Sohn, who was counselor to former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. This term's larger Senate Republican majority, and the likely need for 60 votes, makes the fight all the more hard in 2019.

Michigan's U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters are co-sponsors of the Senate bill. And, as articulated in the bill's just three pages, it would overturn the Trump FCC's rules that overturned the Obama-era FCC's net neutrality protections.

Trump weighed in on net neutrality before, displaying a very limited grasp of what the concept actually means - but generally taking a stance against it. Critics say that not only were there costs to complying with the regulations, but also the way they were written left the door open to direct price regulation of internet access.
