Seventeen die in Delhi hotel fire

Fire at the Hotel Arpit Palace in Delhi India

The death toll rose to 17 from a fire that tore through a hotel in New Delhi on Tuesday, a senior official said.

According to reports, 22 fire tenders were rushed to Hotel Arpit Palace where the fire broke out around 4 am when most people in the hotel were sleeping.

Jain, who visited the Arpit Palace Hotel told reporters that he has also directed the fire department to inspect buildings which are five floors or more and submit a report on their fire safety compliance within a week.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit but the evacuation was hampered by narrow corridors, panelled in wood.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Sunil Choudhary told ANI, "The fire has been doused".

Images showed thick smoke and flames billowing out of the top floor of four-storey hotel, popular with budget travellers.

The hotel is located in Karol Bagh, an area in India's capital city full of shops and budget hotels that is popular with tourists.
