Mickelson finishes off fifth win at Pebble Beach

Phil Mickelson

The event which features a cut after the third day as opposed to the second entered the homestretch with Paul Casey holding a three-shot lead over Phil Mickelson. It's a remarkable turnaround since the last-place finish at the Tour Championship and lousy Ryder Cup performance.

Mickelson at least wanted to try.

@PhilMickelson is a 44-time victor on the PGA TOUR.

'I don't want to be too emotional because I don't want to rub him the wrong way. Casey said there was no way to finish and they had to return Monday morning.

"It means a lot to me to play the final round as focused and as well as I did", said Mickelson, who started the final round three strokes behind Casey. Mickelson never came close to making bogey and won for the 44th time on the PGA Tour. Six runner-up finishes, some in the most heartbreaking fashion, dot his career, the tournament keeping him from a career Grand Slam.

"So at the end of a year ago, even though I played poorly, I had something happen where it seemed like overnight - it had really been in the works - where my driver speed shot up 5, 6 miles an hour, which rarely ever happens to anybody, let alone somebody in their late 40s", he said. "I wish we could do it tonight".

Mickelson's longest putt for par was 4 feet. "Phil has put together a spectacular round of golf so far - 6 under, no dropped shots".

He also won the Pro-Am with Don Colleran, the chief sales officer for FedEx. It was known as "Crosby weather" when Bing Crosby was the tournament host for the better part of a half-century. He has gone 28 years since his first PGA Tour victory and his 44th, and he joined Tiger Woods as the only players to surpass $90 million in career earnings.

Mickelson won on American soil for the first time since the Phoenix Open in 2013. He won the British Open that summer in Scotland, and the Mexico Championship past year.

Some playing groups had fun with the inclement weather though.

Temperatures had been in the mid-40s, but wind chill made it feel like the upper 30s.

Greens quickly were covered by the tiny white pellets, and workers went from using squeegees for excess water to power blowers to remove the hail.

Sam Saunders, whose grandfather Arnold Palmer was among the Pebble Beach owners, scooped up hail and tossed it like a snowball. Patrick Reed's brother laid on his back and tried to make a snow angel.

Golfers, caddies and spectators raced for cover Sunday when hail began to pelt the course at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He preferred to suspend play with his ball on the 16th green, resuming the tournament on Monday when the greens, which took a beating from rain Saturday night and an impressive hailstorm Sunday, would be fresh. Casey had great par saves, and then Mickelson took off. One drive into the ocean and a dispute over the "point of entry" could easy have ensued. "I just get in my own little bubble and I don't see the big picture".

'He's a good guy and I enjoy our friendship. Scott Piercy had a 15-foot putt that was slightly uphill, and he still ran it 7 feet by the hole and three-putted for bogey.

Australian Jason Day and Si Woo Kim, of South Korea, were in the clubhouse on 13 under.
