Peter Chiarelli fired as Edmonton Oilers' general manager

Peter Chiarelli's reign as the Edmonton Oilers general manager and president of hockey operations came to an end late Wednesday night.

Nicholson will now oversee hockey operations, which includes finding the next permanent general manager.

"We've gone through a head coach, we've gone through a general manager now, the responsibility goes back to them in the room", Nicholson said.

The decision to dismiss Chiarelli was made before the Oilers' loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night, according to TSN's Darren Dreger, and the move itself was carried out before the game's conclusion.

Chiarelli looked to be well on his way to succeeding two years ago when the Oilers finished with 103 points and went to Game 7 in the Pacific Division final in the Stanley Cup playoffs. "We'll make some trades at the deadline if they're the right trades to get us in the playoffs, but not giving away the future".

"He really felt that he had let the organization down in not having this team in the playoffs". Chiarelli is the man who traded away Tyler Seguin while he was the GM in Boston, and Taylor Hall while in Edmonton.

The only thing left to play for Chiarelli was the Oilers first-round pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.

Top US envoy returns to South Korea after North Korea visit
Meanwhile, the United Nations has warned that North Korea is continuing its nuclear programme and breaking sanctions. Before travelling to Pyongyang on Wednesday, Mr Biegun said he wanted to achieve some "concrete deliverables".

Two months ago it looked like he'd brilliantly bailed himself out when he fired McLellan and hired the NHL's third winningest coach in history in Edmonton native Ken Hitchcock.

"There's something in the water here in Edmonton that we don't have right, and we gotta get that figured out", Nicholson said. Edmonton has lost 12 of its past 16 games going into the All-Star Break.

Chiarelli, the former Bruins GM, had taken over the job with the Oilers in 2015. The Oilers are in danger of missing the playoffs for the second straight season and third time in four years under Chiarelli.

"We have a lot of work to do here in the organization over this break", Nicholson said. NY traded the other pick to Tampa Bay and got another first-round pick and selected Anthony Beauvillier.

Chiarelli traded away Hart Trophy victor Taylor Hall for struggling Adam Larsson. Nicholson said the decision to extend Koskinen's contract was made by the leadership group as a whole, not just by Chiarelli.

A replacement for Chiarelli wasn't immediately announced by the team. On Monday, Chiarelli signed goalie Mikko Koskinen to a three-year extension worth $13.5 million that also included trade protection.
