Warren Launches 2020 Campaign, Sounds Note of Economic Equality

Democrat Elizabeth Warren launches 2020 US presidential campaign

How much effect the negative headlines will have on her in a crowded field will likely depend on how, or whether, Warren can put the controversy behind her. There are a lot of people out there with money and power and armies of lobbyists and lawyers.

Warren's nascent campaign has been plagued with controversy over a DNA test she took in the fall to show that she has some Native American heritage.

Weeks after announcing her exploratory committee, Warren's announcement in MA today kicked off her campaign in what's shaping up to be a large Democratic field running against President Donald Trump. The backing could prove valuable for Warren given his status as a rising young Democratic star and his friendship with her potential 2020 rival, former Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas.

Warren also apologized Wednesday afternoon for claiming she was of "American Indian" origin in a Texas Bar registration card from 1986.

The plan, according to documents provided by the campaign, would impose a 2% tax on Americans whose net worth exceeds $50 million. Doug Rubin, a Boston-based strategist who advised Warren during her first Senate run in 2012, said in an interview that most voters will respond to "the powerful message she's been talking about", in terms of battling social and economic injustices, rather than the back-and-forth over her personal identity. "Look at what she's done - what she's really done".

Ben Callahan, of Groveland, agreed that he doesn't believe Warren's ancestry should matter "entirely". "It wasn't my top concern", he said.

Bridget Rawding, of Lawrence, said she's "interested about what people are going to do about the issues that matter in this country".

But it is the story of Warren's family that also had the 2020 candidate facing fresh questions about her credibility this week. "I think that's easy to kind of get full of outrage about that, but it doesn't fix anything". "I want to see a revival of civic grace".

The campaign launch comes at a challenging moment for Warren.

"Through the gas crisis she has been very supportive and fought for congressional hearings and everything".

After Lawrence, Warren is set to travel north to campaign in New Hampshire before flying to Iowa for a three-stop tour across the state on Sunday - her second visit to the Hawkeye State since announcing the formation of an exploratory campaign on New Year's Eve.

Should the Democrats regain the presidency in 2020, there would be no better candidate for secretary of the treasury than Senator Warren. Although the Democrat decided against such a run, rumors about her White House ambitions continued to swirl as Warren gained national attention for her vocal criticism of Trump and other GOP leaders.

However, when all is said and done, almost two dozen Democrats are expected to enter the fray, with others like Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, California Congressman Eric Swalwell and former Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke having signaled they're considering a run. Warren's campaign team said she plans to follow the announcement with trips to Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Georgia, Nevada, and California, early or important states that will help pick the Democratic nominee.
