Senate panel approves William Barr, Trump’s attorney general nominee

William Barr testifies at the US Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing

William Barr, nominee to be USA attorney general, testifies during a Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington Jan. 15.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to advance President Donald Trump's nomination of William Barr to USA attorney general to the full Senate for consideration as early as next week. The Washington Post, CNN and NPR have coverage.

Patrick Leahy of Vermont called the "extraordinary circumstances" of 2019, as special counsel Robert Mueller has obtained 37 indictments on various charges during his investigation.

Support for a public release stands at 80 percent among Republicans who say they approve of the way President Trump is handling his job and 92 percent among Democrats who say they don't approve of how the president is doing his job.

"I think we need a steady hand at the Department of Justice, and I believe he has that steady hand", Graham said.

Barr, who ran the Justice Department from 1991 to 1993 during the George Bush administration, answered questions during his confirmation hearing last month that indicated he would bring a conservative approach to immigration, law enforcement and civil rights enforcement. It now heads to the Senate floor, where Barr is expected to be confirmed.

Barr said he takes seriously the department regulations that say Mueller's report should be confidential. The Judiciary panel is set to vote on Barr's nomination Tuesday.

But Democrats said Thursday that Barr's comments did not go far enough to reassure them.

"I believe it is in the best interest of everyone the President, Congress, and, most importantly, the American people - that this matter be resolved by allowing the Special Counsel to complete his work", Barr said. Republicans praised Barr as well qualified, while Democrats who voted against him said they were concerned he might not make public the findings from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Attorney General nominee Bill Barr departs after meeting with Sen.

Trump has repeatedly dismissed any collusion between his campaign and Moscow, while slamming the Mueller probe as a "hoax" or "witch hunt".

Dianne Feinstein, said last week that she is anxious that Barr won't be a check on the president who appointed him.
