Million People Have Already Been Sick With the Flu Says CDC

Flu seasons vary from year to year and experts say they are nearly impossible to predict.

Health regulators have been trying to combat flu outbreaks in the United States and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first new flu medication in almost two decades previous year.

Influenza activity was "widespread" in 30 states - a substantial decline from year-ago data from the week ending January 6, 2018 when 49 states had widespread flu activity.

It's hard to gauge how lethal the flu season has been for children across the country because Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia don't track influenza-related deaths in real time.

While the number of cases has decreased this week, those that were reported are spread out across a wider area. Flu season typically lasts through the middle of the spring. The CDC counts the death of every child from influenza.

In New Brunswick, where no children have died with a lab-confirmed diagnosis of influenza, the virus still seems to be targeting a younger demographic than in the last few seasons.

Trump Accused of Keeping Details of Putin Talks Secret

"If people have not yet had the vaccine, it's not unusual that around this time, after the holidays, we might have a little bit more influenza activity", Murti said.

"Calculations are based on adjusted rates of laboratory-confirmed, influenza-associated hospitalizations collected through a surveillance network that covers approximately 8.5 percent of the US population, or about 27 million people", the CDC said.

The CDC said that reported cases tend to increase in November before peaking between December and February.

"Most people who get sick with flu will have mild illness and will recover in less than two weeks without medical care".

Public health experts say flu vaccines are the best way to prevent the flu.

Flu infections are on the rise across the United States.
