Maroon 5, Travis Scott, Big Boi to perform at Super Bowl 2019

Adam Levine skirted around the rumours last year that Maroon 5 would be playing the Super Bowl half-time show

After months of speculation, Maroon 5 has been officially confirmed as this year's main Super Bowl act.

Artists including Rihanna, Adele, Jay-Z, Pink and Cardi B all reportedly turned down the spot, citing the Kaepernick situation.

Some members of the public, as well as various artists, encouraged musicians to refuse requests to perform at the show as a way to condemn the NFL's treatment of Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and activist. "So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the National Football League on this important donation", Scott, 26, said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump made the kneeling protest a major issue, calling anyone who did it a "son of a bitch" and saying they should be fired.

Thousands signed petition urging the three-time Grammy award victor Maroon 5 to not perform this year in solidarity with Kaepernick.

In May a year ago, the NFL announced that teams would be fined if players kneeled for the USA national anthem.

The pop band posted a one-minute video on Twitter with the caption #SBLIII.

"I'll be watching. Thanks for not succumbing to the pressure not to play", one person wrote. It also featured images of Scott and Big Boi. "Don't put your career before your self-respect". Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL in October of 2018, alleging that NFL team owners colluded to keep him out of the league because of his protests.

Travis Scott hasn't mentioned his appearance on his social media channels yet.

In December, Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium - host of Super Bowl LIII - tweeted an acknowledgement of the petition, utilizing a GIF from Season 2 episode "Band Geeks", which sees SpongeBob and friends perform a crowd-pleasing showstopper during Bikini Bottom's Bubble Bowl.
