UPDATE:Poland's Health Minister, Lukasz Szumowski, said on Monday morning that Adamowicz died from the injuries suffered in Sunday's attack, despite the efforts to save his life.
Deputy Chief Prosecutor Krzysztof Sierak said Monday five prosecutors have so far questioned 20 witnesses and are preparing to question the 27-year-old suspect.
Deputy Chief Prosecutor Krzysztof Sierak said there are "doubts" as to the mental state of the attacker, who used a 14.5-centimeter (5.5-inch) knife on Adamowicz, and that two psychiatrists will examine him.
The shocking attack, previously unheard-of in the European city, has drawn immediate condemnation, even from the mayor's biggest political rivals.
During a five-hour operation, the mayor was given 41 units of blood.
Radio Gdansk reported that Adamowicz was stabbed in the area of his heart, but did not cite its source, while Rzeczpospolita described his condition as "critical", citing unnamed sources.
"There is hope but his condition remains serious", Andrzej Duda, president of Poland, wrote on Twitter, adding that Adamowicz was alive but "gravely wounded".
Adamowicz, 53, has been mayor of Gdansk since 1998.
"It is still too early to say that, because the situation is very serious, and still isn't sufficiently stabilised so as to be able to talk about a positive prognosis ... the prognosis regarding his life and health is uncertain". A second man was stabbed and injured.
The assassination of Adamowicz, a six-term mayor who often mingled freely with citizens of his city, sent Poland into shock.
Adamowicz has always been considered a hate figure in far-right circles for his vigorous defence of migrants and LGBT rights, but no evidence has emerged that the attack was politically motivated.
Gdansk is one of Poland's largest cities, on the country's Baltic coast, with a population of around 570,000.
He called the stabbing "an act of inexplicable barbarity".
The spokeswoman for the ruling Law and Justice party Beata Mazurek said the attack should be "absolutely condemned by all, regardless of what side of the political spectrum they are on". He said Adamowicz needed massive blood transfusions.
A Polish private television broadcaster is reporting that a man has stabbed the mayor of the city of Gdansk.
Gdansk Archbishop Leszek Slawoj Glodz, who was at the hospital during the surgery, said he was praying for a "miracle".
Adamowicz also advocated bringing wounded Syrian children to Gdansk for medical treatment, a plan, however, blocked by the Law and Justice government.
