Microsoft Windows 10 19H1 Adds Reserved Storage Functionality

Windows 10 Insider Build 18312

Microsoft will allow users to reduce the amount of space reserved, but will not allow reserved storage to be disabled.

In a new low, Microsoft has announced that it will soon reserve more than 7GB of your storage just for the upcoming updates. This is a security patch which addresses a number of flaws including a hole in PowerShell, an issue with the Microsoft Jet Database Engine, and a Windows DHCP client memory corruption vulnerability (plus gremlins in the works for Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, and more). Going forward, laptops with a preinstalled version of Windows 10 19H1 will ship with reserved storage feature by default without any need to install the update.

What's very important to note is that Release Preview insiders are still on Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809), so this cumulative update could actually be an early version of a later release that may become available to everyone in mid-January.

Today, Microsoft has rolled out another build for the Windows Insider users in the Fast Ring.

Road near Jerusalem puts wall between Israelis, Palestinians

Reserved storage will be introduced automatically on devices that come with version 1903 pre-installed or those where 1903 was clean installed. The new user interface will require less clicks / taps and should be more consistent with the overall theme, regardless of the device now in use. To make sure this doesn't happen again, Microsoft needs a certain amount of "reserved storage" for future updates. If there's still a space problem for users, even with Reserved Storage in place, the OS will suggest how they can free up space or use a USB thumb drive to carry out an upgrade.

Microsoft reverted the change to its servers after discovering the issue but says admins should additionally remove the KB 971033 update if PCs are still showing the "not genuine" message.

Microsoft's new storage policy may have been aimed at ensuring there are fewer instances of failed updates.

"Since disk space has been set aside for this goal, your device will function more reliably".
