Cuba bus crash: 7 killed, more than 30 injured

Seven people, including four foreign tourists, were killed and 33 others injured in a bus accident that occurred in eastern Cuba, local media reported on Friday. The region is mountainous with winding roads.

Of the 40 passengers on the bus that crashed on a scenic but hazardous stretch of road between the eastern towns of Baracoa and Guantanamo, 22 were foreigners.

Officials were working to identify the dead.

Five passengers remain in critical condition.

CNN's Patrick Oppmann reported from Havana and Hira Humayun from Atlanta.

Tourists from Holland, Great Britain, France, Mexico and Canada were also listed as being on-board the bus.

Details about the names and nationalities of those injured or killed in the deadly crash have yet to be released.

The Cuban military runs the bus company, Viazul, which tourists frequently use to get around the island nation.

Cuba's roads are notoriously poor with many of them badly-lit and poorly maintained, especially in that region of the country, our correspondent adds.

Thursday's wreck was the fourth major bus accident in a month. There were 750 deaths and 7,999 injuries in 11,187 accidents past year in the country of 11 million people.
