Amazon May Be Developing A Game Streaming Service

Amazon is reportedly stepping up its gaming ambitions

Retail giant Amazon is said to be working on a game streaming service, if sources close to The Information (via Gamesindustry.biz) are to be believed.

Amazon has spent years trying its luck in the gaming business, with no significant yields, but streaming might just be the boost it needs, especially as cloud-based platforms gain more traction.

Sony streams games via its streaming service PlayStation Now, available on PlayStation 4 and PC, and it appears that cloud gaming could be a focus for the next generation of PlayStation consoles. It's something that makes a heck of a lot of sense for Amazon to do, given that they're the largest provider of cloud computing services in the world. And this news emerges as Google's Project Stream nears an official launch, coming later in 2019, and Microsoft's Project xCloud gathers momentum, with public trials expected soon. Reporters, however, have spotted job listings relevant to this effort, such as this one for a Lead Cross-Platform Game Engineer. We expect various Twitch features to be wrapped into the service like game video broadcasting and viewing, as well as the Twitch game store and the friends and communications infrastructure.

According to sources familiar with Amazon's plans, the service could be launching in 2020 at the earliest.

Sony already offers a cloud gaming service.

One of the biggest companies on the planet, Amazon, looks like it's extending its reach to yet another sector.

'Instead, the games run on powerful computers inside data centers, allowing people to play them on devices with less processing muscle, including smartphones, tablets and smart televisions.' Amazon hasn't announced any such plans so far or even confirmed the existence of such plans.

It's unknown how much Amazon will charge for its new cloud gaming service.

Google has also jumped into the race to develop a gaming service that transcends the home console, dubbed Project Stream.
