Loud explosion in central Paris - police

PARIS-Four people died and almost 50 were injured in a massive gas explosion that gutted the ground floor of a building in a central Paris shopping district on January 12, authorities said.

France's Prefecture de Police say the blast occurred in a bakery on the Rue de Trevise, in the 9th arrondissement, north-central Paris.

More information to follow. He said that Paris firefighters were already at the scene for a suspected gas leak on Saturday morning when the explosion happened.

Paris police tweeted to warn the public to "avoid the area and allow the passage of the emergency vehicles".

Some reports said 20 people were injured, with two left fighting for life.

Another 37 people had lighter injuries, he said.
