Phoenix police are pursuing DNA samples from every male employee at a private care facility where a patient in a vegetative state recently gave birth.
A spokesman for Hacienda HealthCare says investigators served a search warrant Tuesday to obtain DNA samples from all male staffers.
She has been in an unresponsive vegetative state - which means a person is awake but shows no signs of awareness - for 14 years after a near-drowning incident left her partially brain dead.
The woman had been a patient at the Phoenix facility for years after nearly drowning, according to azfamily.com, which broke the story; police declined to provide NPR with details about their investigation.

Orman continued: "I want to assure our patients, their loved ones, our community partners, the agencies we do business with, Governor (Doug) Ducey and the residents of Arizona, we will continue to cooperate with Phoenix Police and the investigating agencies at all levels in every way possible". It is also unclear if staff members at the Hacienda de Los Angeles facility were unaware of the pregnancy until the birth.
A woman whose 22-year-old daughter is a patient at the facility said she refuses to leave her side until the investigation is conclusive.
But during her time working at Hacienda, she says she witnessed one particularly troubling incident.
A Hacienda spokesperson said the facility was assisting with law enforcement and regulatory agencies on the "unprecedented matter" as well as reviewing its own "processes, protocols, and people".
The facility, which has room for over 50 patients, is now under investigation by police and the Arizona Department of Health Services.
The source also said that Hacienda does not have cameras inside the hallways or rooms of the facility: the rape or sexual assault that happened was not recorded.
Previously, healthcare sources said: "From what I've been told, she was moaning".
