New software can track shared Netflix accounts

If you and your friends all share a Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or any other streaming account in order to save some money, things might be getting a little more hard for you in the years to come.

Software company Synamedia says it can help providers target those who have gotten a little too comfortable giving out their passwords to friends and family.

According to Synamedia, research from Magid has shown that 26 percent of millennials give out their password to others to use video-streaming services.

While the number of people one can share their Netflix account with depends on a personal plan, casual credentials sharing has become too expensive for the streaming service to ignore, a firm that can crack down on cheaters, has suggested.

It predicts that by 2021, credentials sharing will account for £7.8billion of losses in pay-TV revenues.

Amazon’s IMDb Launches Free Ad-Supported Movie, TV Service in U.S.
IMDb had already been featuring short-form original series, trailers and celebrity interviews for years. The content is from the global movie database, or IMDb, which Amazon owns .

The company, which sells many different products which all promise to monetize video-streaming, claims to "empower Pay TV operators to deliver new or augmented video services to drive revenues, boldly reach new markets, and deliver exceptional subscriber experiences to consumers".

For example, it checks what content you're watching in what location.

To avoid paying double, what people do is share the details of their account and passwords. Many casual users will be happy to pay an additional fee for a premium, shared service. "It's a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream", said Jean Marc Racine, CPO and GM EMEA of Synamedia.

The Synamedia Credentials Sharing Insight doesn't just crack down on small-time sharing issues, like a user having the same login as their younger brother in college.

Synamedia says the system has already begun trials, though no official release date has been set as of yet.
