Victorian man arrested for allegedly sending suspicious packages to embassies

Victoria Police said they believed the consulates were specifically "targeted" and the situation was "not impacting the general community".

Police alleged that the man had sent 38 parcels in all to consulates and embassies in Melbourne.

Police have recovered 29 of the packages and have said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The Australian Federal Police have confirmed the man was arrested at his home in northern Victoria on Wednesday night and charged with sending risky articles to be carried by a postal service.

The maximum penalty is 10 years' jail.

Australian police arrested a Shepparton man after he allegedly mailed 38 packages containing a unsafe substance to diplomatic missions throughout southeast Australia.

More than a dozen foreign offices received suspicious packages on Wednesday, including the USA and British missions in Melbourne.

The packages were not believed to be unsafe, but police, fire crews and forensic teams were urged to use breathing apparatus as they documented and double- or triple-bagged the materials for further testing.

Greek vice-consul Georgia Botsiou told SBS Greek radio it had received the package on Friday afternoon.

The incident comes just days after emergency services were called to the Argentinian consulate in Sydney's CBD after reports that a suspicious substance was found in a parcel.

The consulate was temporarily evacuated, but NSW Police confirmed on Tuesday the substance was not unsafe.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the British High Commission it was "liaising closely with the Australian Federal Police and the local authorities regarding the situation".

"Similar advice was subsequently provided to consulates around Australia".

A worker at the Pakistani consulate in Melbourne opened one of the packages about 10am on Wednesday.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said it had sent an email to all diplomatic missions in Canberra this week, after three offices in the capital and Sydney received suspicious packages.
