Rami Malek triumphed as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody

Malek won best actor in a motion picture, drama at the awards ceremony shortly before Bohemian Rhapsody took home the big prize.

The Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and the fact-based comedy Green Book won major film awards for Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Motion Picture Comedy, respectively.

The majority of critics felt the movie was all over the place and did a disservice to the memory of Freddie Mercury. "I could be a bit more naughty than I was, without getting too irreverent or too scandalous".

However, it's not just because the film was the least critically-acclaimed in the category that people had issues with it winning.

Directed by Bryan Singer, it is written by Anthony McCarten, and produced by Graham King and former Queen manager Jim Beach.

When collecting his Golden Globe, Malek thanked the two members of Queen present with him, Brian May and Roger Taylor, before paying a special tribute to the late Freddie, who died in 1991.

The movie awards season hit top gear yesterday when the Golden Globes, the entree to the Oscars, were awarded in Beverly Hills.

The list of winners of the 76th Golden Globes Awards is already out. "I've known her for many years, despite [what] it may seem from that video, so I thought I could easily go up and say hi but in a moment like that it was. very awkward".

The film will include lyrics to avoid any embarrassing "devil for a sideboard" moments as the audience sings along with star Rami Malek.
