Samsung Reveals New MicroLED Displays

Remember Samsung's Massive Wall TV? Now There's A Bigger One

LAS VEGAS-Samsung has arrived at CES with some very big TVs powered by very small lights.

Samsung has announced a new version of its modular TV named "The Wall" which can be split into panels to change its size and shape.

Samsung says it has improved the MicroLED tech since past year by refining the manufacturing process of MicroLED panels to shrink the gap between the microscopic LEDs that make up these displays. The only kicker: Samsung hasn't decided on the timing of an Australian release, although they did confirm to Kotaku Australia that the micro LED TVs would be released down under eventually. It was massive, measuring in at 146-inch, with self-emitting MicroLEDs that are smaller than existing LEDs. Also on display are "TVs" the company dubs "The Window", which can come in tall, narrow designs as well as short, wide rectangular variations. These MicroLEDs feature millions of inorganic red, green, and blue microscopic LED chips which are capable of producing their own light - resulting in a superior contrast ratio and near flawless color. It was technically impressive and showed a great deal of potential, but it has yet to be commercially released. They're joined by The Window, a modular commercial MicroLED display that can be built in a variety of sizes, resolutions, and aspect ratios.

Samsung previously announced that it intends to sell MicroLED TVs to consumers in the USA in 2019, taking advantage of the new-generation displays' thinner panels.

Michigan Family Killed in Wreck

At CES 2019 Samsung unveiled The Wall - a bloody huge TV that certainly lived up to its namesake. That's a step down in terms of resolution from some of the 8K TVs we've heard about here at CES 2019, but that's not unexpected given the nascent nature of MicroLED. Likewise, full specs, pricing, and availability have not been announced yet.

Several new modular display models have been announced.

Samsung already announced the 85-inch 8K Q900FN TV QLED as part of its flagship LCD TV line past year, and just revealed an even bigger 98-inch version here at CES.
