Higher use of social media linked to depression in girls, says study

Social Media-Depression Link In Teen Girls

For example: "more social media use linked to poor sleep which in turn was related to depressive symptoms; experiencing online harassment was linked to poor sleep, poor body image and low self-esteem; and that girls and boys with poor body image were more likely to have low self-esteem".

But twice as many girls as boys use social media for more than three hours a day.

The investigation likewise discovered that 12 percent of light social media users and 38 percent of substantial social media users hinted at having increasingly extreme despondency.

It found that two in five girls are on social media at least three hours a day compared to a fifth of their male peers.

Girls were also more affected when it came to social media use and concerns about body image, self-esteem and appearance, the researchers found, but here the gap with boys was smaller.

Professor Yvonne Kelly, from University College London, and leader of this study said, "it seems, are struggling with these aspects of their lives more than boys, in some cases considerably so".

But a new study published today in the Lancet's EClinicalMedicine journal appears to draw hard links between depression in teenagers and social media use.

Rising suicide rates and depression in USA teens and young adults have prompted researchers to ask a provocative question: Could the same devices that some people blame for contributing to tech-age angst also be used to detect it?

The use of social media apps such as Instagram and Snapchat might be causing teenagers, especially girls, to experience depressive symptoms.

The study had some limitations, including that the findings show only a correlation between depressive symptoms and social media use, not a causal relationship.

"The sad truth is that people mostly share the positive things about life on social media, without showing the negatives".

The authors say the sleep disruption is due to young people staying up late to use social media and being woken up by alerts coming in to their phones beside their beds. Seeing that everyone was happy and enjoying life made me feel so much worse.
