Chance the Rapper apologizes for working with R. Kelly

R. Kelly

Chance, who performed with Kelly at Lollapalooza in 2014, and featured Kelly on his track "Somewhere in Paradise", is one of the artists taking steps toward making amends-or at least acknowledging their roles in promoting and protecting Kelly.

TMZ reports that Kelly also plans to launch a website for the same goal.

In the interview, the contrite rapper expressed relief that the accusations from the multiple women who have accused Kelly of mental, physical and sexual abuse were getting more widely heard. "And I'm having a really hard time understanding why". Their mentions, comments and emails should full of messages on how wrong it is for them to be publicly supporting Kelly over his many accusers.

In response, Aaliyah's mother Diane Haughton denies Cunningham's claims: "My husband and I were always on tour with [Aaliyah] and at interviews and every place she went throughout her entire career".

Known especially for his hit 'I believe I can fly, ' the 51-year-old singer and producer was charged in 2002 with filming sex acts between him and a 14-year-old girl, but was ultimately acquitted in 2008. In 2017 BuzzFeed published its "sex cult" story where a former personal assistant to Kelly said he only permits the women to wear jogging suits so that other men can't see the outlines of their bodies.

John Legend was the biggest name who agreed to speak on camera, making him a hero to Hampton, along with the fearless women who came forward to talk about their alleged experiences with Kelly.

In a statement to CNN at the time, Kelly's publicist, Trevian Kutti denied previous allegations.

Finally, R Kelly did not appear in the documentary and has continued to deny the claims made against him, even releasing a 20-minutes song previous year called "I Admit" in which he addressed the allegations.

The documentary's film-maker Dream Hampton claims she hopes "Surviving R. Kelly" serves as a starter tool to "shift culture" and "talk about rape culture and organise against patriarchy, which harms us all".

Smith goes on to claim he realised Kelly's relationship with Aaliyah was sexual when the singer feared she was pregnant. The singer died in 2001 in a plane crash.

Few celebrities participated in the documentary, despite the willingness of many to record with the artist in the wake of his child pornography trial. "I loved him. I just didn't feel comfortable enough to have a child with him", she says.

Let's hope the conversation will finally spark action and justice for these women.
