First meteor shower of 2019 peaks tonight

The annual Quadrantid meteor shower, which could produce as many as 200 meteors per hour, will peak Thursday night, according to NASA.

'The Quadrantids peak, on the other hand, is much shorter-only a few hours'. During its peak in early January, anywhere from 60 to as many as 200 Quadrantid meteors can be seen per hour in flawless conditions.

You can visit Time and Date for a better idea if you'll see it or not.

The last time that Qatar had an encounter with meteor showers was back in November a year ago when annual meteors "Taurid and Leonid" appeared in the skies of Doha. The shower radiates between the Big Dipper and Boötes.

So what is the history of this yearly meteor shower?

The constellation Quadrans Muralis, first observed and noted in 1795 between Bootes and Draco, was not included in the International Astronomical Union's list of modern constellations.

While most meteor showers have two-day peak, Quadrantids only peak for a few hours, so plan accordingly. This particular asteroid is 2003 EH1, which takes 5.52 years to orbit the sun once.

To view this meteor shower, look for a spot away from street lights.

Here are Nasa's tips for viewing the Quadrantids: 'Come prepared for winter weather with a sleeping bag, blanket or lawn chair. "In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors".

Between January 20 and 21, a rare super blood moon total lunar eclipse will be visible in North and South America, western areas in Europe and Africa, and a partial lunar eclipse will be visible in central and eastern Africa, Europe and Asia.
